7. People detained under the Mental Health Act
Being detained under the Mental Health Act doesn’t prevent you from changing your name by Deed Poll. However anyone who signs a Deed Poll must have the mental capacity to understand the implications of a change of name (see Mental Capacity Act 2005). If they don’t, the name change will be deemed void.
