The best friends were among more than 100,000 people in Britain to change their name this year.

'Superhero status'

Mr Knox-Hewson renamed himself Emperor Spiderman Gandalf Wolverine Skywalker Optimus Prime Goku Sonic Xavier Ryu Cloud Superman Heman Batman Thrash.

Mr Thrash said: "We decided to change our names because we were bored of our day-to-day lives and wanted to do something that reflected our true personalities.

"We couldn't believe how easy it was to do, we just had to fill in a few forms and we were granted superhero status."

Mr Borbidge now goes by the name of Baron Venom Balrog Sabretooth Vader Megatron Vegeta Robotnik Magneto Bison Sephiroth Lex Luthor Skeletor Joker Grind.

Mr Grind said he was looking forward to seeing his new name on his bank card.
