A transsexuals' name change rights

The Legal Deed Poll Service offers a confidential service for transsexuals who wish to legally change their name by Deed Poll. Additionally, you can legally change your title (for example, from Mr to Miss or Mrs to Mr, etc).

As soon as you receive your Deed Poll document you will be able to get all your official documents and records changed to your new name (and title). These include your passport, driving licence, medical records, bank account, credit cards, National Insurance records and so on.

Why choose to use a Deed Poll?

There are two ways you can legally change your name: by Deed Poll, and by Statutory Declaration. However, most transsexuals choose to change their name by Deed Poll for the simple reason that it's a much more straightforward and cost-effective option.

Statutory Declarations need to be sworn before a Commissioner for Oaths or Justice of the Peace which means involving a solicitor in the process. With a Deed Poll, you simply complete an application and we send you a Deed Poll document which needs to be signed in the presence of a witness of your choosing, for example a friend, neighbour or work colleague.

Please note: that when you change your name and title by Deed Poll, it does not change your gender. To officially change your gender you will need a Gender Recognition Certificate from the Gender Recognition Panel. As you will already know, the Gender Recognition Panel will expect you to change your legal name as part of the process of demonstrating that you are living in your new gender.
