1. Name change options that do not need a Deed Poll

Legally, neither person is required to change their surname on entering into a civil partnership. However many couples do decide to share the same surname. Some surname changes require a Deed Poll whereas others do not, mirroring the traditional rights of married couples.

The following do not require a Deed Poll to change your name on entering into a civil partnership -

  • If you continue to use your original surname
  • If one of the couple changes their surname to their partner's surname

If you continue to use your original surname, you don’t need to do anything.

If one of you decides to change their surname to the other partner’s surname, your civil partnership certificate will provide all the necessary documentary evidence of the change of surname. Simply send this to everyone that holds your official documents and records so they can be changed to show your new surname.

Female couples who wish to change their title from either ‘Miss’ to ‘Ms’ or from ‘Miss’ or ‘Ms’ to ‘Mrs’ should read section 3 below.
