4. Changing your title to Mrs
Regardless of what you decide to do with your surname following your marriage, you will probably want to change your title to ‘Mrs’. This section tells you what you need to do for each of the above options.
4.1 If you are applying for a Deed Poll to change your name
If you need a Deed Poll to change your name on marriage you can request a change of title declaration at the same time. Both your new name and new title will then appear on your Deed Poll document. Also included in the Deed Poll pack we send out will be an example covering letter to use when you notify everyone of your change of name and title by Deed Poll.
4.2 If you are taking your husband's surname
If you’re taking your husband’s surname on marriage, then you simply send your marriage certificate to everyone concerned together with a covering letter notifying them that you have taken your husband’s surname on marriage. Note: You should also mention that you have changed your title to ‘Mrs’.
4.3 If you are continuing to use your maiden name
You don’t need a Deed Poll if you decide not to change your name on marriage, regardless of whether or not you decide to adopt the title of ‘Mrs’. If you are changing your title to ‘Mrs’ simply inform everyone in writing that you will be keeping your maiden name but wish to be known as ‘Mrs’ (remember to enclose a copy of your marriage certificate).
Note: As your title doesn’t appear on your passport there's no need to get that changed.
