1. Name change options that do not need a Deed Poll

The following do not require a Deed Poll to change your name upon marriage -

1.1   If you continue to use your maiden name

If you decide to continue to use your maiden name, you don’t need to do anything following your marriage. This is because you are not making any changes to your legal name.  However, if you wish to change your title to ‘Mrs’ please click here.

1.2   If you decide to take your husband's surname

If you decide to follow tradition and take your husband's surname, your marriage certificate will provide you with the necessary documentary evidence that you have changed your surname to your husband's. This is because his surname will also appear on the marriage certificate.

Following your wedding you simply send a copy of your marriage certificate together with a covering letter to all government departments and other organisations that hold your name on record.

Note: To get your name changed on important documents like your passport and driving licence, you will need to send your original marriage certificate - so be sure to buy a few extra marriage certificates from your registrar or minister after the ceremony.

Also note: If you were married in a non English speaking country and your marriage certificate isn’t in English, you will need to provide record holders with an official translation of your marriage certificate or a Deed Poll (which is usually less expensive than an official translation).
